How to Choose Gutta Percha Points — Size, Taper & ISO Standard Explained

ISO sizes, taper percentages, colour codes, ProTaper vs standard — the world of gutta percha points can be confusing. This guide breaks it down so you can order confidently and obturate better.

How to Choose Gutta Percha Points — Size, Taper & ISO Standard Explained

By H.Zepf India Editorial Team  ·  14 June 2026  ·  9 min read

Walk into any dental supplier in India and ask for gutta percha points. You will immediately be asked: what size? What taper? Standard or ProTaper? ISO or non-ISO? If you are not sure what you need — or if you have been ordering the same thing for years without knowing exactly why — this guide is for you.

We will cover everything from the basics of ISO sizing and taper to matching your gutta percha to your file system, reading the colour coding, and understanding what certification actually means.

What Is a Gutta Percha Point, Exactly?

A gutta percha point is a tapered, flexible cone used to fill (obturate) the root canal after it has been cleaned and shaped. It is made primarily from trans-1,4-polyisoprene (natural gutta percha), compounded with zinc oxide (filler), barium sulphate (for radiopacity), and waxes or resins for workability.

The point is placed into the canal — typically with a sealer — and condensed laterally or vertically to fill the space completely. The goal is a three-dimensional, hermetic seal that prevents bacterial re-entry from the apical or lateral direction.

Understanding ISO Sizes

The ISO (International Organization for Standardization) has defined a standard sizing system for root canal instruments and obturating points — ISO 6877 for gutta percha points specifically. The system works as follows:

  • Sizes run from 06 to 140, corresponding to the diameter of the point at its tip (D0) in hundredths of a millimetre
  • Size 20 = 0.20mm tip diameter. Size 40 = 0.40mm tip diameter. And so on.
  • The taper in standard ISO points is fixed at 0.02 (2%) taper — meaning the point increases in diameter by 0.02mm for every 1mm of length from the tip

This standardisation exists so that an ISO size 25 point matches an ISO size 25 file — in theory. In practice, this only holds if both the file and the point actually comply with ISO tolerances. Non-compliant points may be labelled "size 25" while being measurably different, which is why certification matters.

ISO Size Colour Coding

To make chairside identification fast, ISO sizes are colour-coded consistently across compliant manufacturers:

ISO SizeColour
15White
20Yellow
25Red
30Blue
35Green
40Black
45White
50Yellow
55Red
60Blue
70Green
80Black

Above size 80, the colour sequence repeats. This coding is defined in ISO 6877 — any compliant point will follow it exactly. If a box of "size 25" points is not red, the manufacturer is either non-compliant or has made a labelling error. Either is a reason for concern.

Understanding Taper

Taper is expressed as a percentage and describes how much the diameter of the point increases per millimetre of length. Standard ISO points have a fixed 2% taper. But modern rotary file systems often use greater tapers — 4%, 6%, or variable tapers — to shape canals more aggressively and efficiently.

This is where most confusion arises. If you use a 6% taper rotary file to prepare the canal, you must use a 6% taper gutta percha point to obturate it. Using a standard 2% taper point in a 6% taper canal leaves a significant gap in the apical and middle thirds. No amount of lateral condensation fully compensates for this mismatch.

Available Tapers and When to Use Them

TaperWhen to Use
2% (ISO standard)Hand instrumentation (K-file / H-file), tight curved canals, lower anteriors
4%Moderate rotary preparation, premolars, lower molars with moderate curvature
6%Aggressive rotary preparation, upper molars, straight canals with good access
ProTaper-compatible (F1/F2/F3/F4/F5)Dentsply ProTaper file system users — these points match the variable taper of each ProTaper file

H.Zepf gutta percha points are available in 2%, 4%, and 6% tapers across the full ISO size range, as well as ProTaper-compatible points in F1 through F5.

ProTaper-Compatible vs Standard Gutta Percha Points

ProTaper is a rotary file system (originally from Dentsply, now widely copied) that uses a variable taper — each file has a different taper along its length, designed to minimise stress on the file. This creates a uniquely shaped canal that standard gutta percha points do not fit well.

ProTaper-compatible gutta percha points replicate this variable taper geometry. They are labelled F1, F2, F3, F4, and F5 — corresponding to the final ProTaper file used to shape the canal. Using an F2 point after an F2 preparation gives you a master cone that fits the canal like a key in a lock.

If you use ProTaper files and have been filling with standard ISO points, this single change may be the most significant improvement you can make to your obturation quality.

How to Check Cone Fit Before Obturation

The master cone try-in is a critical step that is sometimes rushed. Here is the correct sequence:

  1. Select your master cone based on the final file size and taper used
  2. Estimate the working length — the point should be placed to within 0.5–1mm of the working length
  3. Check for tug-back — place the cone to length and pull gently. There should be slight resistance (tug-back), confirming the cone is engaging the apical constriction. No tug-back means the cone is loose; too much resistance means it is binding coronally.
  4. Confirm on radiograph — a periapical radiograph or CBCT confirms the cone position before obturation
  5. Check the cone visually — examine it for cracks, whitening, or surface irregularities before insertion

If the cone does not exhibit tug-back, do not proceed. Either re-prepare the canal (check for transportation or ledging) or try the next larger size.

What Does ISO 6877 Certification Actually Mean?

ISO 6877 is the international standard that defines the requirements for root canal obturating points. It specifies:

  • Dimensional tolerances for tip diameter and taper at specified measurement points
  • Flexibility — the point must flex to a defined angle without fracture
  • Radiopacity — the point must be detectable on a dental radiograph
  • Biocompatibility — the materials used must not be cytotoxic
  • Labelling requirements — including size, taper, batch number, expiry date, and manufacturer details

A manufacturer claiming ISO 6877 compliance is claiming that their points have been tested to all of these specifications. CE 0197 certification (for European-manufactured products) adds a third-party verification layer — meaning an independent notified body has audited the manufacturing process and test results.

H.Zepf gutta percha points carry both ISO 6877 compliance and CE 0197 certification. Every box includes batch number and expiry date in compliance with ISO labelling requirements.

Quick Buying Guide: What to Order for Your Clinic

For a General Dentistry Clinic (10–20 RCTs/month)

  • ISO sizes 20–40, 2% taper — the workhorse for hand instrumentation cases
  • ISO sizes 20–40, 4% taper — for moderate rotary cases
  • ProTaper-compatible F1, F2, F3 — for rotary users
  • Paper points, full size range (15–80) — 2 boxes each

For a Specialist Endodontic Practice

  • Full ISO size range (06–140) in both 2% and 4%
  • 6% taper in sizes 20–60
  • ProTaper-compatible full range (F1–F5)
  • Paper points full range, plus extra fine (06, 08, 10) for calcified canals

For Dental Colleges (BDS Clinical Training)

  • ISO sizes 25–60, 2% taper in bulk — these are the sizes used in undergraduate clinical training
  • Paper points sizes 25–60
  • H.Zepf provides bulk institutional pricing with batch documentation for DCI compliance

The Bottom Line

Choosing gutta percha points is not complicated once you understand the system. Match your point taper to your file system. Use ISO-certified points with colour coding you can verify. Check the expiry date and do a bend test before every procedure. And order from a supplier who can tell you exactly what is in the box and where it came from.
